I am of course willing to write AUs that deviate from the history written out there but I want to discuss it first. Don't just spring it on me, please! Rule of thumb is if you are unsure, ask!

Scorpius is wonderful. Scorpius is dear and a friend and dating him has been such a nice thing. Felix would be perfectly content to carry on like this for a while.

But he doesn't think Scorpius would be.

He does his best to make Very Sure. He does his best to make sure it isn't just typical early relationship anxiety; to make sure that he's reading the signs right and not just imposing his own thoughts of what should be. He spends a bit of time smoking and thinking it over.

So he's quite certain, when he finally decides to speak. He waits until the space feels as non-threatening as possible, to voice the thought.

"...Hey." His own voice can't help but be a little quiet, "I need to tell you something."

This is probably the most content Scorpius has ever been in a romantic relationship. Felix is so kind and charming and has been nothing but wonderful to him. Things have been comfortable. And that's about all they've been.

He hates to admit it even to himself but... he's starting to have doubts about how long this could last. None of his other relationships have gone particularly long or even very well. How long before he messes this one up? Hopefully he wouldn't lose a good friend in the process.

Even though the moment is comfortable and peaceful, and Felix's voice is quiet and calm, Scorpius can't help but tense at those words. Conversations starting like that have rarely resulted in good news, in his experience. "What is it?"

One hand will smooth lightly at Scorpius' shoulder before his hand drops and he shifts to meet his eyes. He has to see how genuine this is, after all. He has to see that this isn't out of a place of hating him.

"I care about you." Which he hopes has been obvious, even before, when they were friends, "And being with you like this is wonderful, and I want you to be happy."

He doesn't speak a 'but,' but it hangs in the air, regardless.

"I don't think you'll be happy with me. Not forever, anyways. Not like you could be with-- someone else."

Slowly, slowly. He'll work his way to Albus in a moment.

Scorpius is still a little hesitant to make eye contact these days, but he manages for this, fussing at the fabric of his pants nervously as Felix speaks. He hears the unspoken 'but' loud and clear and it nearly drowns out the words Felix is saying. Nearly.

"I-- I am happy with you, Felix. I like being with you. There's-- There's no one else." Alright, that was a bit of a lie. But it wasn't anyone who would ever return his feelings. Rather, someone he was trying to get over. Did Felix know that? Had he been too obvious and ruined his chances? "Please, I-- Give me another chance?"

Maybe it helps that his smile is still calm, still fond. He hopes so.

"'m trying to, Scorp," he says quietly, easy affection in his voice, "Just-- it's another chance for you to get with the person you've actually had feelings for all these years, 'nd not me."

"I--" Scorpius flusters, shaking his head in denial. "I don't even know who you mean." He hesitates a moment, almost afraid to ask, but-- "Did I-- do something wrong? To make you think I don't want to be with you?"

A shake of his head.

"You didn't do anything wrong," he assures, "'ve felt-- entirely charmed, with you. I know you care about me, Scorp. 's easy to see it. But there's no need to lie to yourself or to me."

Another careful smoothing of his hand on Scorpius' shoulder.

"You like me, but you've had bad for Albus for yonks, now. I thought that maybe with all the other guys you've been seeing lately that you'd gotten over him, but I don't think you have, after all. 's something in the way you look and talk about him. Reminds me of when my Dad talks about Mum."

Because his parents have obviously been his model of a good relationship for as long as he's known the meaning of the phrase.

"I thought maybe I was just seeing things at first, but I don't think so, anymore. And that's not wrong, Scorpius. It just means that I should let you go be free so you can tell him."

(when last we saw our heroes, scorp had reminded lily that gran would probably see her in her very real cast (courtesy of drunken table dancing) and now she's wondering how to Remedy the situation)

scorp plz. plz just ask albus to date you.

I'm not being dense. I know Albus better than nearly anyone.

He may agree with you, but I doubt that'll help you much.

I don't see why you couldn't. From my understanding, the cast works similarly to several spells used for broken bones, just much more slowly.

No offense, Scorp, but you're a little bit dense when it comes to really seeing the way he feels about you.

That's true. Suppose I ought to stop by St. Mungo's then.

[At least she's not trying to heal it on her own?]

He still looks uncertain, like the idea of not having done anything to make Felix upset is foreign to him. Maybe it's more the idea that Felix is so okay with this that's foreign to him. Scorpius knows he wouldn't be able to handle it with the same grace.

It's a tough thing to admit to his feelings, though, after trying to hide them for so long. "I don't-- How are you not upset?"

"I mean, 'm not-- overly fond of the idea of not getting to kiss you anymore. That's been pretty fun."

Because honesty is the best policy, and he doesn't know how to be anything but.

"But I want you to be-- happy, Scorp. The happiest you can be. And that's not with me, and I can see that now, and it's not-- I mean, it's definitely not the greatest feeling, and if it doesn't work with Al, I wouldn't mind giving us another go. But you were my friend first, and I'd be-- a piss poor excuse for a friend, if I didn't make sure you at least had a chance at being happy. That's what'd make me more upset, honestly. Knowing I might've-- kept you from him."

Scorpius falls back onto the couch with a natural dramatic flair and it's a wonder his glass doesn't spill. It's probably charmed. He sets it down anyway to bury his face in his hands, his breath shaky and wet with tears. "Why does this keep happening? What am I doing wrong?"

"No-- no, Scor, don't put this on you."

He settles down next to him on the couch, one hand lifting to soothe lightly at the other young man's shoulder.

"Cheating's always on th'cheater. You have-- a beautiful, big heart that terrible people keep taking advantage of, and it's all on them, for being terrible. 's not you."

My son has informed me that I must 'consider the times'. In an effort to do so:

Do you no longer put socks on the door? I can knit other clothing if that would suffice.

Perhaps a simply a crochet 'Do Not Enter' sign?

And yes, she can actually crochet thank you. She doesn't need house elves for everything for her even if they are a nice convenience.]

Perhaps a simply holiday greeting, then? Or I could knit a sweater. [Now that one is a lie. She can't actually knit, but she has trained a few select elves to mimic knitting on a Molly Weasley level, because Narcissa Malfoy is never one to be outdone on any level.] An S and an A? Or two matching ASS sweaters?
